Window’s Black Screen of Death

There appears to be a new virus that is hitting computers. Some claim that Microsoft’s updates are the cause of this issue, but I think it is a Trojan that downloads itself through an email. If your email settings allow the preview pane to display email content then it is possible for the virus to infect your computer without your intent. You will need to turn off the preview pane on your email program.

The virus causes a computer to stop responding when booting and displays a Black Screen with a message C:\windows\system32\ripojopo.dll is not a valid system file.

In order to fix this you must first delete the file from your system. I think the easiest way to fix the problem is by booting into safe mode command prompt and delete it using DOS.

Press the F8 Key while booting until you get a list of boot options. Using the arrow key highlight the option that says, “boot safe mode command prompt.” Once in the command prompt you will need to change the directory to where the file is located. Type in
cd c:\windows\system32 and hit enter. This will take you to the area where the dll file is located. Once there type in del ripojopo.dll and hit enter.

Once you have deleted the malicious .dll file, you should be able to boot into safe mode. Reboot your computer into safe mode with networking. When your computer has rebooted you will need to edit your registry.

Hit the windows key and r key at the same time. This will open the run window. In the box type in regedit. The registration editor will appear. At the top of the window under the edit menu hit find. Type in ripojopo and hit enter. When the editor finds the key, highlight it and right click on it and delete the entry. There might be more than one. You will need to delete any reference to this file. To find out if there are any more references to this file, you can hit the F3 key.

Once you have deleted the registry keys, you can reboot your computer into safe mode with networking and run the online clean up tools from Microsoft at http:/safety.live.com.
The on you will need to run is the clean up. Once your at the Safety.live site download and install the safety scanner, and run the program.

Once the program has run you should be able to reboot into regular mode. If your able to get back onto the internet in regular mode you should run the full system scan at Safety.live.
