1959 German Telefunken Hymnus HiFi Stereo

This stereo was made in Germany, by Telefunken. The dials are in the German language.

The radio sounds great. It picks up FM from 40 miles away better than my car stereo.

It has an original manual and schematic diagrams. The manual is signed by a German named E.F. Wohleb.

The turntable has been replaced with one that has American writing on the push buttons, and it works very well.

It has a new cartridge. It took me several months of hard searching to find the cartridge, but I found a source for them from MUSONIC UK. Many thanks to Garage A Records in New York for their help in finding out what kind of Stylus it was.

It has a 45 RPM Record Holder that works too.

The FM Band works the best. The AM band works too, and so does the Short Wave band, but the buttons are temperamental. I purchased some replacement parts for these but I haven't installed them yet.

It has four speakers, two- 260 X 180 mm (10 1/4" X 7 1/8") in the front, two- 180 X 130 mm (7 1/8" X 5 1/8") on the sides.

One of the smaller ones should be replaced. I have it patched up with nail polish and it works okay.

It has the following tubes installed in it.

  • Two Seimen EL84 amplifier tubes installed in it that were purchased as NOS and registered at 100% each
  • One ECC83 Telefunken tube that registered at 100% installed
  • Two Eye Tubes, both are Telefunken. one for signal strength and one for loudness
  • One EF89 Mullard installed
  • One ECH80 Westinghouse installed
  • One NOS ECH81 unrecognizable brand installed
  • The rest that are installed are Telefunken original

If you need tubes you can try to find them on EBAY or you can try some of the Antique Radio Tube sales on the internet. One suggestion it to try a search for a specific tube like a Telefunken NOS EL 84 which are very popular tubes that are also very rare, and expensive.

Changes that I made are:

  • A new three prong power cord for grounding purposes.
  • New Brass Philips on panel for easier access.
  • An External TV Antenna, and a short wave wire antenna
